Hello readers, let’s talk

This is my first question, because the new editor. But I’m not new here. I was nearly 38 years ago, I began working at the Kipling is a newly graduated college graduates looking for a job in a magazine. I have some title, copy editors, editor, Kiplinger.com editor, senior editor and live partly responsible for the currency (and before that, the car writer, I still miss the show).

I put my Kipling sincerity, because in many ways, I feel like I already know you. For decades, I have been writing and story editing and distribution, population learn to read and digest the results of the reader survey to see which posts are most popular.

The first thing I do is call the editing staff meetings reintroduce your readers, our writers, editors and reporters. Over two-thirds of you are men, and that there is no significant change in years, but you have been getting older and affluent, this is a good choice, you’re a little rough around the middle (ah, I like a lot ). And it probably will not surprise you that retirement stories and articles, focusing on dividend income and the highest score in our monthly survey.

Really focus on Kiplinger reader service, I promise to continue to provide the best possible stories- most accurate and reliable in all publications today focus on personal finances. As my predecessor, Janet Bodnar, he wrote last month, “Kipling is worth noting that, as those who want to have a serious story to help senior reporter of peopl real paradise Ë deal with complex financial issues.” . (Janet will continue to write her monthly money savvy woman columns). At the same time, I intend to introduce some changes, and I hope will make the magazine more timely, more relevant to a wider audience.

Challenges and opportunities. The Internet has shaken the world of print. Print ads also declined, we charge a one-year subscription does not pay printing and mailing, in fact, a new subscription steep cost, what is in dollar question, is exactly the same it is almost 40 years ago (adjusted for inflation, which is $ 34). Even so, the Kipling family remains committed to supporting our print and digital publications.

Internet, our fine website, Kiplinger.com, for research and breaking news great and maintain social media. However, the Internet has its quirks, including flashing ads and automatically start recording, and blur the boundaries between the suspect from a credible source of information and content. I guess, like me, you like to read, you can hold a magazine in your hands. Therefore, the staff of the magazine and I have been brainstorming what will make you spend each lasting more enjoyable and useful time. A couple efforts appear in this issue: more tables and graphs (see our cover story to make your money last retirement), and address the impact of your financial situation (see employers were not insured health care battle for the headline event we take medical disorder).

We also want to hear from Y to Europe and more. To this end, we launched a new feature called crowdsourcing, in which we ask you to answer questions to share with other readers.

For future issues, we are considering new features and enhancements that will make a new generation of readers more convenient: one, to explore the basics of money, and for the Millennium column. We are also podcasts, so you can listen to us when you edit on the go.   First of all, I’d like you more dialogue. Please feel free to send me a note and let me know what you think.
